Faldo Wins NPP Internet #34

I owe it all to Beerhog and the relentless practice of playing him heads up at Buffalo Wild Wings and losing my butt. But it was practice at one of my many poker weaknesses, and it sure helped later.

We had two tables of four to start the night:
#1 Mikeniks(Faldo), ArticBlast, Duder and Sev4TSev
#2 Aqualung, Boother, Matchy and Nahanni

After a mere 18 hands and the first level change, we went to one table and had not lost anyone.

On hands #28 and 37 Boother cripples Aqualung, but Aqua was still above water, still holding on to a life-jacket of 16 big blinds.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Aqua above water! Get it? Life jacket?? HAHAHAHAHA!
I kill me.

On hand #61 Aqua cripples ArticBlast as his 66 gets iced by Aqua’s 99. I’m on a roll!

On hand #62 Boother raises and gets re-raised by Nahanni and Boother (8th) calls all-in with (AT), taking a shot. Nahanni has (66) and hits a full house to boot.

On hand #65 a short-stacked ArticBlast (7th) goes all-in with (A3) and is called by Aqualung’s (AJ) and gets no help.

On hand #69 a short-stacked Duder (6th) goes all-in with (T6) and is called by Matchy with (KQ) and Matchy helps himself with a [K] on the flop.

So at the break we stand:
Nahanni 3445
Matchy 3105
Aqualung 2575
Mikeniks 1545
Sev4TSev 1330

On hand #80 the new chip leader Matchy goes all-in with Nahanni (5th). Nahanni holds (22) and Matchy (KhTs). Four straight hearts come out on the flop and turn and we will not have a repeat winner.

On hand #115 Aqualung (4th) misses the flop and bluffs all-in with (Q2) against Mikeniks who had bet the flop calls with (QJ) and a [J] on the flop. Gutsy bet and a gutsy call. Sev4TSev was about even with both of us in chips and us going to war could not of made him real happy. I do not get run down and now I have some chips.

On hand #120, there is an [A and two diamonds] on the flop and Sev4TSev (3rd) goes all-in with (A8) and Matchy calls with (6d3d) and hits the flush on the river to crash the big plane.

Now to heads up:
Matchy 8000
Mikeniks 4000

By hand #150 we are even. Matchy is destracted as he is also participating in his football draft. It was great that he made it to the game in spite of the pressing commitment. A lesson 4Putt, Cigar4John and a few others could take a cue from.

By hand #160, Mikeniks has a 8500 to 3500 lead.

On hand #169, Matchy (2nd) escapes one all-in but on hand #172 Matchy runs into another hit flop for Mikeniks.

They all bet and call the flop of [6cQhJc]. Matchy is holding (KdTc) and Mikeniks (QsTs).
They both check another [Jd] on the turn, but get all-in for the river. Matchy has the straight draw and is low on chips.

But a harmless [7] falls on the river and Mikeniks-Nik Faldo gets win #2 of the year.

1st – Mikeniks (Nik Faldo)
2nd – Matchy
3rd – Sev4TSev
4th – Aqualung
5th – Nahanni
6th – Duder
7th – ArticBlast
8th – Boother

Internets poker ethics question - at the start of the game last night I found my self with one other player and 2 who were "sitting out" since we started with 8 at seperate tables. Myself and my opponent simply started folding for each other in order to take every other small and big blind from the two who were sitting out. The faster we worked, the more chips we got. To be honest I found it kind of exhilarating but I also thought it was slightly underhanded. We did it to the tune of about $200 each then Boother showed up and threw a wet blanket on our scheme. Question of the day...does Matchy owe Boother and Nahanni a drink for scamming some chips off them last night?

matchy from the sounds of it, you owe them nothing, if you aren't there you lose your chips just be glad your other opponent didn't abuse you and take all your blinds tooooooooo

Anonymous said...

Matchy, I am so glad you brought this up...I was going to comment on this, but then thought that I should let it go because I didn't want to 'rock the boat'. Personally I think it is underhanded and poor sportsmanship. Why not play heads-up? Why purposely fold your hand because you made a deal to steal the blinds? Especially when these are people that you play with on a regular basis and are "friends" with. So your buddy is running late, why do you screw him? I thought that this was happening because when I came back I noticed that I had lost 160 chips and if the players at the table actually played poker instead of working out a deal to steal the blinds, I would have had more chips sitting there. The other thing that tipped me off was the comment "the faster the better". So then I got to thinking...and checked the hand history to read that it was suggested "hey, why don't you take boother's blinds and I'll take nahanni's blinds..." then I wondered how friendly of a game this is when the people you are playing with are so willing to screw you if you are having internet problems or working late problems. Personally, if I won the game, I'd like to think that I won it fair and square (and probably mixed with a little luck) and it wasn't because I screwed my buddy while he was having connection problems (or whatever) so that I could give myself a 200 chip lead. But hey, that is just me. Just like I would never, in the middle of a hand, speculate on the hand when I wasn't even in the hand to begin with! Out of the thousands of players I have played against on PS and on Party Poker, never once has any of them speculated on my hand while I was in the middle of a hand...the reason that I remember this is because I would have reported the person to the gaming site...and I have never had to do that. So just FYI...I know this is a "friendly" game and it is only $5...but if anybody decides to speculate on my hand in the middle of a hand, I will report you. Speculate all you want when the hand is over, or if we are heads-up.....I don't care......talk about boobs, strippers and reach arounds all you want.....I don't care....you can tease me about how you "heard that chicks who play poker on Tuesdays aren't getting laid" all you want........I don't care about any of that.........but DO NOT speculate about my hand while in the middle of a hand (unless you want to be reported). there, I said my peace, thank you.

On one hand what I did was competely within the rules. I have done the same thing when people fold around to me and the guy on my left is the big blind and sitting out. Simply raise and collect his big blind. On the other hand what I did required collusion with another opponent. I am guilty as charged and felt a little bad afterward because I knew the people whose chips I took (one being one of my best friends on earth!) But signing up and not being there IS putting your chips at risk. My bottom line...it was a bit of a scam that I would do in a minute in a random sit-n-go but would not do again in our game. It does make a good topic of discussion.

a little cheesy to take the blinds from someone you know. i would do it! but you guys are good people. what were you thinking?

i dont understand what you are saying or suggesting about the speculation factor? please clarify so i can give you my 2 cents.

I was in a hand with Nick and Nick bets out on the turn (we were heads-up at this point as every once else had folded) and I eventually raise and then Nick is thinking about it...and then somebody else who wasn't in the hand types "she as AK" while Nick was thinking...he eventually pushed all-in. In the end, it didn't matter what was "said", because Nick had flopped top 2 pair (KQ) against my AA. But that is really irrelevant...speculating on somebody's hand (or divulging what you folded, etc)in the middle of the hand is extremely poor poker etiquette.

hey jen whatever your name is,maybe if you hadn't opened your mouth about my play for the 2nd week in a row and I know nik can vouch for that, maybe I wouldn't of said anything but I don't like being invited to a so called friendly game ( and I come to find out you don't even know the host, but I work with him)and being ridiculed by YOU, you don't like the way I play keep it to yourself.. and as far as stealing blinds show up next time, at 8pm you were not even registered so don't give me this crap about internet problems and so forth. SOMETIMES PEOPLE SIT OUT IN HOPES OF PEOPLE BEING ELIMiNATED THEN THEY HAVE LESS PLAYERS TO DEAL WITH. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it

Dont invite me to your home games Nik if this whiny woman is going to be there.

One more thing Jen I think you are mad because I read you like a book.............sorry baby but thats the way the cookie crumbles

I do like the way you explained the hand though..............

I don't host live games anymore Aqualung. Beerhog and Boother have taken over. I will host the internet tourneys and write about other's home games and my casino poker activities.

Speculating on a hand when not in it AND heads up is wrong - in a casino game, an on line game and even in a friendly game. It is just wrong!

I will vouch for Nahanni commenting/criticizing on Aqualung's play two weeks in a row. He obviously didn't like it.

Aqualung commented on a hand Nahanni was in. Nahanni obviously didn't like it.

Let's call it even and bury the hatchett. Don't talk to each other or comment to each other. Let's go to opposite corners and have a time out!

Anyone want to comment on my great plays on words in my write-up? What a writer! I thought it was the funniest stuff ever written!

Nik Faldo said...

As far as the ante stealing while people are sitting out - this is a tough one.

It is wrong for two players to make a deal on how they will play against each other in order to benefit themselves or hurt the other players.

It is not 'fair' (whatever that means) that in some tourney structures or sometimes as 'the cards fall' - that a player that is not even playing can benefit or even cash in the tourney.

But then again, they paid their money and if getting blinded out gets them a higher finish then them actually playing, who are we to criticize?

My answer on what I would do? -
IT DEPENDS!

If I knew they would be right back or are on their way - I play it straight.

If I don't know the status of the missing players and the other guy "ACTS" like he wants to hurry and take the blinds, then I would silently go along.

I would never offer that deal and would verbally turn down any such offer to quickly steal blinds.

In our little tourney and league point set up - I think we should play it straight, guys and gals.

It is for fun and nobody is buying in and sitting out with the idea of pulling a 'fast one'.

Beerhog - u miss to play golf and the whole game goes to hell - including me winning!

Chips…most definitely, if a player is not present, then their SB and BB will be posted and it will be an automatic fold. I understand that and don’t have a problem with that. There is no way I would purposely sit out until somebody got knocked out, that is just weak and poor game play…I was at work late and got home just before the game started, so I registered so I could play, but need to change, go to the washroom, etc. Collusion to purposely fold your hand to steal the blinds is something different than just losing your blinds because you weren’t sitting at the table. I get a sense, however, that no matter what is said, you will not change your opinion on this…and after the few exchanges that we have had, I understand why.

I don't remember whining at any point…and I don’t think my 2 comments were THAT bad...good lord! I think somebody is a bit sensitive! Let me see...in the first situation (last Tuesday) you moved all-in with less than the best hand and really not that much was in the pot and I called because I am not folding a full-house...you whined something like "typical internet poker"......to which I replied "typical internet all-in". I was just teasing and trying to be funny. I'm sorry you took it the wrong way. Hey, I suppose it was a genius move if I didn’t have a bigger full-house. In the second situation (last night), I apologize...after you had moved all-in pre-flop about 6 of the last 10 hands (with 2500+ chips with blinds at 50/100 and only 150 or 250 in the pot), no matter how crazy I think that play is (or rather, lack of play), I should NOT have voiced my opinion (what I said (for the benefit of others) is "I heard that people that play all-in pre-flop poker don't know how to play"...(I heard Doyle Brunson say that a few weeks ago on Poker After Dark). I admit, I have a problem with voicing my opinion on poker play and normally I am playing anonymously with people that I don't know and will never meet...so sometimes it is easy, in the confines of my living room, to say things that I never would say in a live setting........but then I get carried away and sometimes in live settings, things just blurt out and I know I shouldn't have said them. Soooo…this is something that I know I need to work on and I will. And I am very sorry that I said anything and that you were so upset by what I said. Regardless, it doesn't matter what I said in the past or present, there is no excuse for speculation...well...there is one excuse...the only excuse would be that a person did not know that they were doing something improper or acting with poor poker etiquette. So I am glad that you now know, and if you do it again (to me), I will report you. I think PS will likely give you a warning or 2 before they turn your chat off. As for me, I will steer clear of any conversations with you. As for everyone else, I enjoy playing with you guys and enjoy the trash talk…especially the < cough > homo < cough > references…they are pretty funny. :)

As for this stuff about saying what people got in their hand, WHY IS THIS A PROBLEM. it can't be worse then what goes on in the live game at mike's when you have Nikki flipping his cards over while he is still in hand and all that other crap that goes on, and the live game has more money on the line, this tourney you yahoos play is only 5 buck, sounds like this fellow read Jen correctly and it pissed her off and if she did what he claimed, PUT DOWN HIS PLAY, hell Mike you got into a fistfight at a live game when a guy did that to you, so maybe you all should just block each others chat...........

For what it’s worth, here are my 2 cents on Chesky’s original comment. While I am not terribly fond of the collusion part of the situation, I have no problem if it happens. I know full well when I sign up, pay my money and don’t show up to play, that’s my problem, not anyone else’s. I don’t expect any players to slow down on my account. I have missed so many tourneys by just a few minutes, I am happy to pay for my registration knowing that I might not make it to the game. Trust me on this one; I am not sitting out waiting for the field to thin down before jumping in. I love to play poker and don’t waste my time on strategizing on how to try and weasel an edge over my friends.

Chesky, while I would be more than willing to accept a beer from you if you were to buy me one, I certainly don’t think you owe me one. However, reading the rest of the chat on this post, you may want to buy Jen a rye & ginger!!!

As for the speculation end of things, it shouldn’t happen during a hand, period!!

Nik, I am finally glad that one of your great narrative stories (about one of our $5 games) is finally getting the popularity it deserves!!! Me personally, I would be more than happy to continue to host games as long as you promise to continue to write about them and our internet games!!! I really do enjoy reliving them thru your site….even if I end up being the first one out!!!

I'll side with Jen here.

The moment anyone starts conspiring to 'steal' the blinds and trading thoughts out loud about what other's may have had things cease at being a friendly game.

If you need to win a $5 tourney that badly for the cash then start a website where you can show off your B-cup man-boobs for the same amount of cash.

Nik knows this. As for the blinds deal I like what Boother said if he is not there then so be it his loss if players play quickly, I've been in tournaments where people get a good amount of chips then sit out in hopes of making the money..... I realize this is a friendly game and if I decide to play again I won't do it.

Oh by the way I really liked Jens apology, she just made excuses for what she said, she didn't really apologize....... get a clue boys shes PISSED because I read her hand easily........

first of all what has happened here WOW,

Now I have talked to a couple of my close friends that were in the game of question. You have a new player that Mike brings to a game finally, thats something of a miracle to begin with, anyways he comes to what he believes is a friendly game, he says this Jen girl put down his play 2 weeks in a row, now I verify this and I see she admitted it, so it happened. Now Aqua says he speculated her hand out loud, now that is wrong but come on guys worse than that has happened in our home games plus the way he explains himself makes total sense, shes a chick and he pissed her off when he read her hand correctly, I actually thinks its funny.

now not one of you has commented about Jen putting down Aqua, but you have all thrown your 2 cents in on him making comments about her cards, even 4PUtt chimed in, does he even get a furlough to play poker anymore.

Anyways that was a bad way to treat a new player, plus Jen i'm not to hip on chicks from Canada named Jen.

Matchy see what you started, you get a conscience after you steal blinds, the the chic you bring to the game puts down a newbie Mike brought, I think you OWE us all a beer next week, oh and ask that pussy down the street (sean) if he wants to play next week, hes on my shit list but I will still play poker with him hehehhehehe
