Nik Faldo Wins NPP #42

Strange night at the Devil’s Night table. New player joins the fray after my brother gives him the password. But the new player "Chiefsfan17" seemed to fit right in. He didn’t know it but he gave an “Hlam14” impression by announcing his holdings DURING the hand! More on that later.

In addition, we had more railbirds than we had seated players it seemed. At least when we got to ‘heads up’. DavetheDog was a sweater, and Nahanni and Matchy stuck around. Thanks people. Some of the Chief's friends were in attendance also.

Chief, as nice of a guy as you seemed to be, to stay in the tourney, you have to send me an email to the npokerp address, and tell me a little about yourself. Well, stuff I can tell these mopes on the blog about, anyway.

I WILL be sending out a NEW password for the tourney, so everyone get your emails to me. And for gosh sakes recruit for next year.

Chief, you seemed to have a big following at the table. Tell them to send emails, and get into the trash talk on the blog.

Onto the game:

The action was subdued by the discussions with the ‘new guy’, Chiefsfan. That is natural that this group of sharks would want to feel out the new guy. I peg him as a combo Hlam14-Nahanni – and that is a compliment to the Chief!

On hand #51, Tigercub, with (77), calls an all-in by Sev4TSev with (AQ). A [Q] on the flop and the current chip leader is reduced to middle of the pack status.

On hand #54, Nahanni throws a raise out there. Tigercub, who spilled the password to the Chief, is the only caller. The flop was [4c Jc Td] and they both checked. The turn [Ah] got a bet from Tigercub and Nahanni called. The river is the [Qs]. Nahanni bets big with (Kd Js) and the straight, which ended Tigercub’s (6th) night.

By hand #70, I have been reduced to low chip guy. Sev4TSev and Nahanni had been destroying my chip stack with their perfect play. So I needed to catch a break – like them going to war. The stars must have aligned.

On hand #75, Sev4TSev takes a hit from Nahanni to slide slightly below me in chips. Nahanni has the chip lead.

On hand #78, I throw in a small raise with (Ah 8h) and am called by the ever dangerous Sev4TSev (5th) with (Kh 7s). The flop is great for me [887]. I make another small bet and Sev4TSev pounces with his two pair and it is over for him.

On hand #82, the Chief (JT) and Nahanni (AT) get all-in after a flop of [66T]. Played perfectly by both, it is up to the PS gods. They like the Chiefs over the Leafs in this one as a J on the river evens up the chips nicely at the break.

Matchy 2740
Chiefsfan 2160
Nahanni 2065
Mikeniks (Faldo) 2035

As you can see I am literally in a “chip and a chair” situation. No mortal could ever come back from such a deficit! It is impossible. Johnny Chan stopped by and told me it was hopeless! Phil Ivey and Negreanu recoiled in horror at my situation! No one has ever come back from such a low position before they cried!

Ok, that’s enough sauce on the ribs.

On hand #98, the ever aggressive Nahanni (4th) goes all-in with (33) and gets called by the Chief with (AJ). The Chief hit the pair to beat the squaw.

On hand #106, Matchy (3rd) reads it right and calls with (K9) against the Chief’s all-in bluff with (J6) suited. But the flush appears and the flame goes out on the Match.

That sets up the heads up play between (heads up record in parenthesis) The Chief (14-3) and Mikeniks-Faldo (2 – 3411).

On hand #106, I get close to even as my (A8) doubles me up.

On hand #117 is where the Hlam14 impression stars. The Chief announces his hand at now-railbird Nahanni’s request that he tells. The Chief announces (75) unsuited and that he is not lying. I am holding (76). What would you do?

I go ahead and go all-in. If he has me, he has me. But he is telling the truth. But the Poker Stars gods said, “No angle shooting Faldo. You two are splitting this pot! Go back to war!”

On hand #119, my (AJ) gets me the chip lead.

We battle, but on hand #130, the Chief (2nd) calls my all-in with (A9), but my (44) holds up and I win my third NPP tourney this year.

1st – Mikeniks (Nik Faldo)
2nd – Chiefsfan
3rd – Matchy
4th – Nahanni
5th – Sev4TSev
6th – Tigercub

Lovely recap...but I must correct the JT vs AT hand...the random newcomer (who I think is probably really your brother, son, son-in-law, cousin, uncle, sister, or mother...or a combination thereof), moved all-in preflop for the 3rd time within the last few hands and I have Ad Td on the button with 3400 chips to 1100 chips...so I call and was pleasantly pleased to see JT off suit. I'm a huge favourite...70/30 preflop...88/12 on the flop...94/6 on the turn...then...of course...in what has been happening to me since about August...the frigging ass river brings one of 3 cards in the deck that kept the random newcomer around…a defining moment for him that got him to place in the money. Oh well…that’s poker right? (tell that to my laptop that is in pieces).

On another note…I still don’t understand how a random person just wanders into a private tourney and would even want to play……..???….why???…there are a bizzilion public tourneys offered on PS every millisecond of the day…why would you want to wander into a private $5 tourney? I just don’t get it. I don’t mean to be a bitch to the random newcomer ass who knocked me out on the bubble…….er….I mean…I’m not being mean…I just don’t get it. Am alone on this?

I have no idea who "Chief" is. Neither does Tigercub or Bronco76.

That is why I am changining the password for next tourney, so everyone - make sure I have your e-mails. Including "Chief", if you want in.

As for someone wandering in, who knows why someone would wander in? I can't figure out how any American could be a liberal, a union member or a Democrat. Or how men ever allowed women to vote. But I digress.

I did get one other write-in person who asked to be in. From France, no less. I wrote him back and asked for more information and he did not respond.

Chief seemed like a nice enough guy. If he gets me his contact info, I don't see a problem.

The solution is simple, Jen. Everyone recruit from their friends and family until we get 15 to 27 regular players. Right now we average seven. I would like to have a two table tourney - or at least a full table guaranteed every every tourney. if we don't get them, we don't get them.

This little tourney is something I look forward to every Tuesday night.

"allow women to vote".......do your knuckles hurt from dragging on the ground?

man...you really are a staunch republican. That's unfortunate...I was really starting to like you.

Jen I would not take Mike's chauvinist comments too seriously. Poker games are kind of He-Man woman hater clubs for guys to drink, smoke and talk about "broads". I think many guys (myself included) are a little different when we are around our wives. As I think you know, many guys simply prefer no women during their sacred gaming time, for reasons which include, but are not limited to, puffing their chest out a little. I would bet his views on suffragettes are a little different while having morning coffee with Mrs. Mikeniks. He is, however, quite a staunch republican. Check out lqblog.com for some good reading. It is his political blog, and you don't have to agree to comment.

On another topic, I for one do not want games with 15 or more players on Tues. nights. I get up around 5:15 for work and on those occasions when I can hang deep in the tourney I don't want to play 'til midnight. I am curious how others feel about this. Myself, I am happy with our 6-10 player nights.

I checked out that politcal site...I'm confused, yet again...who is Hank Dagny? another secret covert name for mike/nik? is that site about liberal bashing and conservative praising or are any real issues discussed in a productive mannor and a bipartisan sort of way? I don't know if I could stomach reading any more to find out.

I ain't no Republican! I'm a conservative.

I still like you Jen.

Mathcy, I would not worry about being up too late or us having 20 people every night.

I am a veteran of getting poker games together, and not recruiting is the same as dying.

It is a strange phenomenon. If you have alot of palyers - it's the place to be - and you get more.

If you try to hold it to a set group, you end up short eventually.

The format for next year (quarter winners) will mean guys taking more nights off - I think. But points will be more valuable too.

Let's see what happens. Having TOO MANY poker players has never been a problem I have had to deal with.

Here is my 2 cents on several topics;

First, Mike Nik's, I LOVE your detailed write ups. Even when I play in a tourney can't wait to read the written version just to get a few laughs. Keep it up!!!

Next, I really like that 2008 will be broken into quarters with a championship tourny at the end. I would like to see the championship tourney have around 8 or 9 player somehow....

I would prefer to not have huge tourneys, 12 to 18 would be ok. I, like Chesky, value my sleep on a school night (just getting old I guess!!). Plus, if we could keep it to friends, or friends of friends, or friends of friends of friends, so we loosly know them, that would be ok too....although not very practical probably I would imagine...

Republican (of which I consider myself) or Demicrap....both parties are f*cked up and need to get back to reality!!!

That's it for now.

Boother out!!!!

I LOOOOOVE Mike, Nik and Hank's recaps...I think it is waaaaay awesome that they do them and are so quick at it too! good lord, it usually takes me like 2 days to 1 week to get meeting minutes turned around at work! I still think that we should pay a fee or provide a small gift to Mike, Nik and Hank...they deserve it (is that too liberal?). For example, we all transfer $5 to Mike at the beginning of the season (lord knows he'll give it back to us anyway). Mike (Nik and Hank) last year I had drafted a tournament format based on the Pokerstars Invitational format (I LOOOOVE that format!) and would like to share it with you via email to get your thoughts.....I wish we could do it on PS, but it requires starting with additional chips during the semi and quarter finals per player based on how they finished during the "regular" season. I would love to set that format up and play at my house weekly or every other week...but I dunno how many people would be willing to come to Windsor (not many, I am guessing...but perhaps you could be enticed to come with the knowledge that Studio 4 is about 3 miles from my house….????). Anyhow, more people playing per game could be managed in a timelier fashion if PS would allow for private turbos or 10-minute blinds……I will email PS to request adding that to the private tourney options.

As for liberal/conservative…….I live in Canada = socialism…therefore, our PC party (Progressive Conservative) is probably equivalent to your democratic party…our Liberal party is probably equivalent to your greenpeace party (if you have one) and our NDP (new democratic party)……..well…I don’t think there a direct comparison. So I guess you can tell the angle I would be coming from on political opinions. That’s ok…I’m glad this is a poker blog.

Liberals would not tolerate an extra "rake" (tax rate) from the winners in their casino or home poker game. They would scream "How can I make money with a tax rate (rake) like that?"

But they vote to take EXTRA rake from fellow citizens.

Amazing.
