A conservative watchdog group released documents Wednesday it claims show U.S. Sen. Carl Levin exerting pressure on the Internal Revenue Service to “shut down conservative-leaning” groups, but a closer look at the documents shows the Detroit Democrat asked the same questions of liberal organizations.
The website of Judicial Watch posted correspondence between Levin and Internal Revenue Service officials regarding the process for granting tax-exempt status to social welfare groups.
Judicial Watch said the newly released documents reveal “an intense effort by Levin and IRS officials to determine what, if any, existing IRS policies could be used to revoke the nonprofit exemptions of active conservative groups and deny exemptions to new applicants.”
