NPP’er Taking the 5th!

Not the silence against self-incrimination (although Faldo has to) and not a fifth of Dewer’s Scotch (although Faldo has), but 5th in tournaments outside of the cozy NPP arena.

Here is more proof that NPP prepares our players for riches when they venture out.

Bigbrimar, who has not been playing much lately, found a little time to take 5th in a 360 person tourney on PokerStars and nab a quick profit of 22 times his entry.

Then Theedouble*d turned in this report from a 988 person tourney on Full Tilt Poker - finishing 5th:

“So close! I went out against Quad 7's (Geez). But I am happy with my play. Was chip leader for most of the game.

It was a bounty tourney and I knocked out around 10 players – so it was like a freeroll after that. I won 45 times my entry.

I attribute my successes to some serious study, NPP experience, and Faldo's training. Hope you are kickin tail too!” – Theedouble*d

I guess if Faldo giving both of you my money on Tuesdays is training – then I guess you are welcome!

Tomservo2’s Win Really Tightens Up the Race!

Well this is more like it! Not that it was not impressive watching K9isadog destroy the field the first quarter, but a tight race is just plain more fun!

Tomservo2 defeated twenty players AND the Faldo chip curse to get himself right back into the mix. T3chlady also got closer to the top of the board. Hang on to your NPP hat folks!

Douge2’s Humor Corner XXXVII

Luck of the Draw

A big Texan stopped at a local restaurant following a day roaming around in Mexico.

While sipping his tequila, he noticed a sizzling, scrumptious looking platter being served at the next table. Not only did it look good, the smell was wonderful.

He asked the waiter, “What is that you just served?”

The waiter replied, “Ah senor, you have excellent taste! Those are called Cojones de Toro, bull’s testicles from the bull fight this morning. A delicacy!”

The cowboy said, “What the heck. Bring me an order.”

The waiter replied, “I am so sorry senor. There is only one serving per day because there is only one bull fight each morning. If you come early and place your order, we will be sure to save you this delicacy.”

The next morning, the cowboy returned, placed his order, and that evening was served the one and only special delicacy of the day. After a few bites, inspecting his platter, he called to the waiter and said, “These are delicious, but they are much, much smaller than the ones I saw you serve yesterday.”

The waiter shrugged his shoulders and replied, “Si, Senor. Sometimes the bull … he wins.”

NPP Makes an Appearance at Premier Poker Lounge

It was another fun night at Premier Poker Lounge Saturday, with a tasty dinner, a tournament and some ring action. Twenty-three players entered and NPP was represented by ten members – nine playing and one dealing. Here is the approximate order of finish:

LittleRedElf (chopped prize pool – places #1 thru #4)
Thai Food (chopped prize pool – places #1 thru #4)
Mistermusic5 (final table)
ThePunk75 (final table)
Fourbetbluff (final table)
Pingsticks
Mikeniks-Faldo
Theedouble*d
Derf-63
Yecats423 – (dealing)

Not a bad showing with five of nine making the final table with two cashes.

Faldo retired to the cash game where a small re-coup of tourney expenses was made.

Yecats423 had the idea suggesting that a schedule of PPL NPP visits up on the blog, so people could plan better. A very nice idea.

That will give Beerhog, Matchy and Boother36 plenty of time to beg their wives to be able to go - and give Davethedog plenty of time to beg his wife not to send him.

How I Am Dumb Playing Poker

Let me count the ways. Man, infinity is a big number. Maybe I will just list the top ten.

1. I get moody when I get behind. Not that I become rude, but my usual friendly, amusing and easy-going nature begins to evaporate when things are not going my way. It’s fine on line where you can turn off the chat or punch your PokerStars body bag (every one has one, right?), but in public, a sullen image does you no good at all. I know this, but have to battle it all the time.

2. I lose focus in long sessions. Actually, I do it in short sessions, medium sessions and all the others in between. Pure laziness is all this is, and I may be the all-time laziest poker player on the planet. I just refuse to work hard for the entire time playing. I seem to take breaks – usually from hand #5 - until the time I cash out.

3. I fear losing. No matter how many times I correctly tell myself that at the levels I play, I will never end up in the poor house – or how many times I remind myself that outcomes of hands don’t matter – I still fear losing. It’s not the money – it’s the ego. I need more gambling in me and less fear of looking stupid or feeling stupid. [Insert “everyone already knows Faldo is stupid” joke here].

4. I tighten up when losing. Some drop back to fundamental poker is a good plan, but I tend to take my already rock-like play and turn it into a frozen Mt. Rushmore. When most players go on tilt, they press weaker hands to get even by catching lightening in a bottle. My ‘tilt’ involves “waiting for the nuts”, which is a slower death, but more painful and death just the same.

5. I don’t’ push rushes. When things are going my way (the ten minutes twice a year it happens), I don’t push the envelope to maximize profit. [Maybe that is why it is only 10 minutes a year. I make sure it is only 10 minutes with my play.] When the cards are rolling, I usually refuse to ‘open up’ and let the poker gods shine on me. The negative feeling that the rush will end as soon as I turn up the heat, keeps the heat off permanently. That’s just wrong.

I guess I really have only five really bad habits. Feel free to clue me in on the rest of them.

Here are some others that may be the devil in your game:

 Taking slim draws to the river
 Pushing a rush too far
 Staying in bad games
 Don’t complete bluffs or moves
 Calling when everything is telling you to fold
 Folding when everything is telling you to call
 Giving poker lessons at the table
 Playing with too small a bankroll for that level of play
 Playing poker with the rent money
 Playing drunk, tired or in a bad mood
 Blaming the cards, dealers, poker site or other players
 Admitting that you know Faldo

Engineers – Not Lawyers in the Joke Category, but Close

Here are a few knee slappers…or groaners:

Q: When does a person decide to become an engineer?
A: When he realizes he doesn’t have the charisma to be an undertaker.

Q: What do engineers use for birth control?
A: Their personalities.

Q: Why did the engineer cross the road?
A: Because he looked at the file and that is what he did last year.

You might be an engineer if:

 You take a cruise just so you can go on a tour of the engine room.
 You compliment your wife by saying her hair is nice and parallel with a low hardness reading.
 You sit backwards on Disney rides to see how the special effects were done.
 You spent more on your calculator than your wedding ring.
 You still own a slide rule and know how to use it.
 You window shop at Radio Shack.
 Your laptop costs more than your car.

I Got a Ride On

Two male engineering student friends crossed paths on campus and one says, “Where did you get the great bike?”

The second engineer said, “Well I was walking yesterday in secluded woods behind the campus when this beautiful woman rode up on this bike. She threw the bike down, took off all of her clothes and said, ‘Take all you want, big man!’

The first engineer said, “Good choice. The clothes probably would not have fit.”

Get'er Done

An Architect, an artist and an engineer were discussing whether it was better to spend time with the wife or the mistress.

The architect picked the wife because that builds a strong foundation.

The artist picked the mistress because of the passion and mystery involved.

The engineer said, “I have to have both.” “Both,” the other two said surprised?

“Yes. Each will assume you are spending time with the other, so you can then get back to the lab and get some work done.”

Wingsfancurt Wins His 2nd NPP Tourney

An omen to the Red Wings playoff run? I hope so!

Wingsfancurt used hot cards and bully tactics to carve out his second NPP victory. He overcame two other hot players AND a faulty internet to win it.

We had 27 players tonight, welcoming back Rjmech and introducing Bendandsnap (twss).

On to the action:

16 min: Funtoon (27th) moves in with (KK) and is called by Derf-63 with (77) and a [7] falls on the flop.

21 min: Rjmech (26th) gets no nub on his return.
24 min: Tomservo2 (25th)
30 min: ThePunk75 (24th)
31 min: T3chlady (23rd), after her trip Queens get run over by Absea98’s straight, Absea puts the final nail in T3’s coffin as his (AK) out-last’s her short-stacked (SS) (Ks 9s).

35 min: Pre01 (22nd) sees his (77) lose a coin flip to Absea98’s (AQ) when an A flops.
36 min: Douge2 (21st)
39 min: xxxKdogxxx (20th)
42 min: A SS Odds2win777 (19th) sees his (Tc 9c) fail to run down Pistolboy70’s (AK).
44 min: A SS Tigercub8189 (18th) goes with (JT) and runs into (AJ).
46 min: Yecats423 (17th) goes with (22), but Bendandsnap calls with (KQ), and hits a [K] on the flop.

47 min: Fusciardi (16th).
48 min: Theedouble*d (15th)
50 min: BigDaddyTman (14th) has to go with (Kd 8d), but LittleRedElf holds (A8).
57 min: Pistolboy70 (13th).

1st break:
Vanettej 8035
Wingsfancurt 7956
Absea98 4205
Bendandsnap 3578
Meatsword 3323
Mikeniks-Faldo 2654
Derf-63 2548
LittleRedElf 1860
Mistermusic5 1810
K9isadog 1746
Suetman1 1560
Fourbetbluff 1225

65 min: Absea98’s two pair snaps off a SS Mistermusic5 (12th).
68 min: A SS Fourbetbluff (11th) tries with (KJ) and runs into Meatsword’s (A8).
72 min: K9isadog (10th) steals Faldo’s bubble spot.
82 min: A SS Suetman1 (9th) loses with (K8) to Vanettiej’s (Ad 6d).
86 min: A SS Derf-63 (8th) has to try with (KQ) cannot run down Meatsword’s (AJ).
88 min: A SS LittleRedElf (7th) goes with (Ah Jh) (64%) and is called by Vanettej with (Kh Th) (36%), and he hits his [K] on the flop.

This was the first really ‘bad beat’ recorded tonight. Oh, but PokerStars had a doozy in store for Faldo.

91 min: Chip leader Wingsfancurt (AT) (16%) makes a standard raise from the button as the three players before him all fold. A SS Bendandsnap (6th) moves all-in with (AJ) (20%) and a SS Mikeniks-Faldo (5th) (64%) has to go with (AK). Of course Wingsfancurt calls.

The flop is a near lock for Faldo: [8 K 3], giving Faldo a (96%) to (2%) and (2%) chance to win the hand. But a [J] on the turn and a [Q] on the river, sends two packing. (twss).

A nice showing by the newbie, Bendandsnap.

100 min: Absea98 (4th) goes with two pair, but Wingsfancurt holds trip fours.
116 min: Vanettej (3rd) has to try with (88), but Wingsfancurt is on fire! He correctly calls with (Ad 6d) and hits his [A] on the flop.

Heads up: Wingsfancurt 24000 - 16500 Meatsword

119 min: Meatsword (2nd) semi-bluffs with (Kh 5h) and a flop of [Th Qs 7h], but Wingsfancurt holds (Q7) and is not going anywhere. When the flush misses, it’s over.

Congratulations to Wingsfancurt on his 2nd NPP win.

1st – Wingsfancurt – 24 points
2nd – Meatsword – 19 points
3rd – Vanettej – 15 pts
4th – Absea98 – 12 pts
5th – Mikeniks-Faldo – 9 pts
6th – Bendandsnap – 7 pts
7th – LittleRedElf – 5 pts
8th – Derf-63 – 4 pts
9th – Suetman1 – 3 pts

Every one else earned one (1) point. Standings and Totals on the right side of the blog!

Winners Take Control

The key to winning is to get the best of it and make the most out of it. That means exploiting an edge to your maximum advantage whenever possible.

Winners get the best of it by being brutally honest about their play, being brutally realistic about the results they can obtain, focusing on the long term and acting like a winner.

Be decisive in your play. Losers are decisive, but impulsive. They go on a whim, a feel or a panic. Winners are decisive by analyzing every decision and then strongly acting on it. Yes, that includes folding – with confidence that it was the right play.

Acting decisively also can used in game selection, seat selection, controlling emotions, working on improvements, and deciding when to play and when to quit a session.

Winners control the things they can and ignore the things they cannot – like the turn of a card, for instance.

Other ways of taking control involve being selectively aggressive, pushing a rush and adjusting to changes at the table.

Taking control means accepting the fact that you have to “pay your dues.” You have to understand that you are not “entitled” to win. And the hard facts are that “suck outs” and “bad beats” keep the tables full.

If bad beats never happened, all that would be left for you to play poker against would be Phil Ivey, Dan Negreanu, Tom Dwan, Patrick Antonious, LittleRedElf, Fourbetbluff and Boother36 and K9isadog. Go ahead – take the 9th seat at that table.

PS: This entire article needs to be tattooed on Faldo’s arm so I can re-read it when I play. Heal thy self I think is the correct terminology.

NPP at Premier Poker Lounge April 24th!

The NPP Tournament Committee has selected the 24th of April for the next NPP at PPL night. They worked long and hard (twss) on this decision. Besides, Tiffany said that NPP tournament headquarters is sending the pole out to be re-furbished that weekend (twss).

Checking the PPL blog it appears that Saturday is a $50 tourney, deep stack tourney. Bring your cash and your "A" game.

Check the comments soon for the time the tourney starts. Doors open at 6pm but the time the tourney starts is not listed anymore at the PPL blog. It was 7pm but now may be 6pm because of the stack-blind structure or the summer season.

Either way, Faldo will be there at 5pm in the bar having "dinner" prior to the tourney.

Douge2’s Humor Corner – XXXVI

Homework Anyone?

A foursome is waiting on the men's tee while another foursome of ladies is hitting from the ladies' tee.

The ladies are taking their time, when finally the last lady is ready to hit the ball. She hacks it 10 feet; goes over to it, whiffs it; and then hacks it maybe another 10 feet; and then hacks it another 5 feet.

She looks up at the men who are watching and says apologetically, "I guess all those fucking lessons I took this winter didn't help."

One of the men immediately replies, "Well, there you have it lady. You should have taken golf lessons instead."

I Tell You, It’s In the Genes!

A golfer was involved in a terrible car crash and was rushed to the hospital. Just before he was put under, the surgeon popped in to see him.

"I have some good news and some bad news," says the surgeon."The bad news is that I have to remove your right arm!"

"Oh God no!" cries the man. "My golfing is over! Please Doc, what's the good news?"

"The good news is, I have another one to replace it with, but it's a woman's arm.

I'll need your permission before I go ahead with the transplant."

"Go for it doc" says the man. "As long as I can play golf again."

The operation went well and a year later the man was out on the golf course when he bumped into the surgeon.

"Hi, how's the new arm?" asks the surgeon.

"Just great," says the businessman. "I'm playing the best golf of my life. My new arm has a much finer touch and my putting has really improved."

"That's great," said the surgeon.

"Not only that," continued the golfer, "my handwriting has improved, I've learned how to sew my own clothes and I've even taken up painting landscapes in watercolors."

"Unbelievable!" said the surgeon, "I'm so glad to hear the transplant was such a great success. Are you having any side effects?"

"Well, just one problem," said the golfer. "Every time I get an erection, I also get a headache."

70 min: Douge2 (11th) has (KK) but xxxKdogxxx hits his flush. Ouch!
73 min: K9isadog bubbles (10th) after three tough losses in a row.
81 min: A SS Vanettej (9th) (A3), and Absea98 (8th) (JJ), have to go. But they run into xxxKdogxxx’s (KK) from the blinds.

85 min: Pistolboy70 (7th) runs into Fourbetbluff’s (KK). Timely.
90 min: Mikeniks-Faldo (6th) runs into xxxKdogxxx’s (QQ).
95 min: Tomservo2 (5th) fought back from nearly felted after a bad beat and is in the thick of it. He goes with (22) and a flop of [2 Q 7], but runs into T3chlady’s (77). Set over set is just ugly – for the loser.

106 min: Yecats423 (4th) loses to Fourbetbluff’s trip Eights.
110 min: They are all-in after a flop of [5h Ks 9d]. A SS xxxKdogxxx (3rd) tries to semi-bluff catch with (QT), but cannot catch Fourbetbluff’s (44).

Heads up: Nearly dead even between Fourbetbluff and T3chlady.

113 min: T3chlady (2nd) has 14200 chips. Fourbetbluff has 18800. 4bet raises small and T3 calls. The flop is [8c Qh Th] – a true action flop. Everyone has to have a piece of this. How much is the question.

T3 fires out a small bet and 4bet only calls it. The turn is a [4s] – which should be a total brick.

T3 tries to buy it right there with a pot size bet, but is called. The river is a perfect “BINGO” or “DEATH” card – the [9h]! Well, it’s all there. Straights, flushes and over-cards all could have this pot.

T3 moves all-in with (KK) and some fold equity if 4bet has two pair. But he doesn’t (KJ). He has the straight.

Congratulations to Fourbetbluff for taking over the 2nd quarter lead!

Faldo 9th in an UB Rebuy Event

My (AK) and a flop of [AJT] ran into trip 8's on the turn. Oh well.

Two hundred and thirty three (233) entered and Faldo managed a final table appearance. I never had to re-buy, but I took the re-buy option as soon as my chips dipped below the minimum when the blinds passed me and the double add-on at the break.

Many pros swear by Re-Buy tournaments because of their value. You paid the tournament juice (10% usually) only once and buy the rest of your chips at the flat entry fee amount.

So if the tourney is a $10 buy in, you would pay $11 to enter. But the re-buys are only $10. Many pros will enter a $1000 + $100 re-buy tourney and re-buy nine times ($10,100), rather than enter a $10,000 + $900 ($10,900) tourney.

The fields are much smaller and the cash is paid to a lesser number of players. Where the WSOP $10,000 event with 6,000 entries pays around 500 places, The $1,000 event will pay only 200 places in a 2300 player event.

In 2006, Daniel Negreanu once re-bought 48 times in a WSOP $1000 Re-buy buy event before busting out. He would have had to finish 8th to make his money back.

In 2004, Daniel re-bought 28 times in the same event, but finished 3rd netting a $100,000 prize for a nice profit ($72,000).

Now back to us mere mortals. Remember what I said about volume. Edge divided by variance (EV) times number of events equals profit. EV x N = P. For those of you going to school in Ann Arbor or that have, ignore this paragraph. No sense giving yourself a headache.

Consider entering a $1 re-buy tourney with the plan of re-buying or adding on three times (total cost, $4.10), rather than a $4.40 tourney. Remember, juice kills bankrolls.

Phil Galfond’s Top Poker Tips

Phil Galfond (OMGClayAiken) has been one of the most feared on-line players in the world for years. Except for Tom Dwan, the mysterious “Isildur,” and of course Faldo – no one has garnered more ink, praise or recognition in the on-line poker world.

Galfond launched BluefirePoker dot com, a poker training site. Here are a few of his tips:

Ask yourself, why am I betting? – There should be a reason behind it. Build a pot? Chase out better hands? Setting up a play later? Protecting your hand? The important thing is to go thru the process of understanding why you are raising.

Ask yourself, why are they betting? – Try to get inside your opponent’s head and …again, go thru the process of thinking about it. Don’t “insta”-any poker decision.

Quit – for a while – if need be. – Don’t play if you are miserable, tired, distracted, or sick. This is just common sense – like not voting for Democrats – but people mindlessly do it anyway.

NPP’s Just Doin’ What They Always Do – Cashing!

T3chlady Wins Full Tilt Tourney

T3chlady is having the worst run of luck on PokerStars – this side of Faldo of course.

I track the hands on Tuesdays and I cringe at the beats T3 has taken that crippled her stack or eliminated her. Just like Faldo.

But she never complains. Just shrugs and says, “That’s poker,” and moves on to the next game. Just like….........Faldo?

Her perseverance pays off on another site as she bested a 180 person field, and won the tourney grabbing close to 40 times entry! Another strong showing by an NPP alum.

Great job T3chlady!

Vanettej turns in this report:

"I took 44th in a 1605-player PokerStars tournament for a little bit less than 5x the buy-in. A PS Pro - Karlo "elmagopr" Lopez - played in it as well, though I didn't have any play time against him. Got pretty tough heading toward the money. At one point, my table had five players in the top 50, including myself. I must have worn myself down a bit more than I should have, I went out on a hand I really shouldn't have.

(A8 suited) in middle position, raised to 12k with blinds at 2-4k (I had about 100k in front of me). BB calls. Board was A-2-4 7 7 and I led out on every street with a shove of 50k on the river. BB had AJ to take me out. It was a stupid shove, as I knew I was beat when he called my 18k bet on the flop, but I figured I could represent A7 or another equally lucky suckout."

And Faldo was able to make a 4th place finish in a PokerStars 90 player tourney, which was good enough to make that day of five tourney’s played profitable (2 cashes out of 5).

Tuesday builds winners.
